As a result of learning mathematics in school all students should:

1.1             Acquire mathematical skills and knowledge to enable them to deal confidently and competently with daily life

1.2             Develop their knowledge and skills in using mathematics.

1.3             Be able to communicate quantitative and logical ideas clearly and precisely

1.4             Recognise that mathematics is of a fundamental importance to the functioning of society

1.5             Understand and appreciate the nature of mathematical thinking

1.6             Understand the dynamic role of mathematics in social and technological change

1.7             To provide boys and girls with equal opportunity to achieve success and self-confidence in mathematics

1.8             Have their specific needs identified and supported

1.9       To achieve these goals, mathematics at school must be a positive experience through which students use a range of strategies to confidently approach and solve mathematical problems and challenges, developing a sense of power from what they learn.

 

2.                  NATURE:

The program is based on the V.E.L.S. and the Early Years Numeracy Program and is supported by a range of current mathematical publications. The program includes Number and Algebra, Space, Measurement, Chance and Data, Reasoning and Strategies. Calculators and computers will be an integral part of the Maths Program. The Maths Program follows a sequential development through the CSF levels and Early Years Numeracy growth points. In order to improve confidence and competence, daily Maths will be related to children’s interests and experiences and children will be encouraged to use concrete materials
